Stack the Income Statement

Build the Multi-Step Income Statement from the top down. Sales Revenue is already in slot 1 — your job is to pick the chip that goes in each slot next.

🎯 Objective

Place 7 line-items into slots 2–8 in canonical order: Sales Returns & Allowances → Sales Discounts → Net Sales → COGS → Gross Profit → Operating Expenses → Net Income.

🎮 How to Play

  1. The highlighted slot is the next one to fill.
  2. Tap the chip from the bank that belongs in that slot.
  3. Correct → it snaps in. Wrong → the chip flashes red, try again.
  4. Fill all 8 slots to finish the round (4 rounds total).

📚 The Multi-Step Income Statement

A multi-step income statement shows three subtotals in a fixed order. Reading top to bottom:

  1. Sales Revenue — total amount customers were charged.
  2. less: Sales Returns and Allowances — refunds and partial refunds.
  3. less: Sales Discounts — early-payment discounts taken.
  4. Net Sales — the real revenue earned.
  5. less: Cost of Goods Sold — what the inventory cost.
  6. Gross Profit — what is left to cover operating costs.
  7. less: Operating Expenses — salaries, rent, utilities.
  8. Net Income — the bottom line.

🧱 ESL Memory Aid

"Sales, Cuts, Net, Cost, Gross, Ops, Net." Contra-revenue lines sit right under Sales Revenue, before Net Sales — never inside Operating Expenses.
