Build the Balance Sheet layout for both kinds of business
Put the parts of a Balance Sheet in the right order: the heading lines, the sections, the subcategories, the totals and the accounting equation. You build it first for a business with one owner, then for a company. The equity section is the one part that changes.
The Balance Sheet shows what a business owns and owes on one single date. It follows the accounting equation:
Assets = Liabilities + Equity
Important: A Balance Sheet says "As of [Date]" — one single day. "For the Month Ended" covers a period of time, so it belongs on the Income Statement.
Owner's Equity:
• [Owner's Name], Capital
• Total Owner's Equity
Stockholders' Equity:
• Common Stock
• Retained Earnings
• Total Stockholders' Equity
Everything above the equity section is the same for both. Only the equity words change.
Company name, "Balance Sheet", and "As of [Date]"
